How To Legalize A Benin Republic Issued Certificate In Nigeria

  •  I am writing this article purposely to provide the needed information to any Nigerian who schooled in the Benin Republic.
It is no more news that many Nigerians now enjoy taking advantage of a smooth educational system in the Republic of Benin which happens to be a neighboring country to Nigeria.

Apart from a smooth running educational calendar enjoyed in the Benin Republic which is devoid of strikes unlike public tertiary institutions in Nigeria and killing tuition fees in the private ones in Nigeria, the country also have one of the best power supply in Africa.
The country seems to be building and developing every single day which is endearing students from other countries, most especially Nigeria to pursue their academic dreams in the French speaking country.

If you schooled in Cotonou, Benin Republic and you are asked to attest, legalize or apostille your certificate for use outside Nigeria purposely for employment or educational, you may have to pay attention to this. Since your certificate was issued by a school in another country or outside Nigeria, the process of getting your certificate attested or legalized will be a little longer than someone who graduated from a school in Nigeria.

Issues of legalization usually do come up when there is a need to travel outside the country for employment or educational purpose. For a Nigerian or any other international student who graduated from a tertiary institution in Benin Republic to legalize his or her certificate, he or she will have to first legalize the certificate in a court in Benin Republic as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Benin Republic before proceeding to the next process wherever he or she wishes to use it.

Below is a sample of a certificate legalized in a court in Benin Republic.

For instance, if you a Nigerian, you graduated from Benin Republic and you need to use your certificate to secure admission for a master's program in China, Germany....etc, you will first have to take the certificate back to Benin Republic where the court will verify the authenticity of the certificate and legalize it before proceeding to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Benin Republic to legalize it as well.

Once that is done, you will bring it back to Nigeria and then present the certificate at the consulate of Benin Republic located in Nigeria. The consulate of Benin Republic in Lagos Nigeria is located at
    4, Abudu Smith Street,
    Off Adeola Odeku,
    Victoria Island, Lagos.

You will make some payment to the embassy's account and they will in turn legalize the certificate once they see the Court's attestation on the document.

Be aware that attestation or legalization at both court in Benin Republic and consulate of Benin Republic in Nigeria are not free of charge, they are services that involves payments.

Once it is done at the consulate, you will then take it to the ministry of foreign affairs in Abuja where it will also be attested before eventually taking it to the Chinese embassy or any embassy which had requested for the legalization or attestation.

An advice for a Nigerian student who is currently studying in the Benin Republic is this, once your certificate is out, make sure you attest or legalize it at the court before returning to your country just in case you may have a need to use the certificate to further your studies or securing employment in another country.

The image below shows where the court that does the legalization is located in the Benin Republic. For those who studied in there, getting the address won't be a problem.
