Document attestation is commonly requested by most companies in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) before appointment is being given to an employee to work with them as a skilled labour. The reason why it is very important for any Nigerian who wishes to work and live in the UAE to have his or her documents attested is not far fetched from the fact that employers pay more or rather, they pay a better salary package to an employee who has a certificate to back his or her profession than another employee who is seen as being unskilled. I may go on and give you reasons why you need to attest your documents or educational certificates before travelling to the UAE but I will like to limit this article to the documents you can attest to work in the UAE.

I have written a detailed article on how to attest your certificate in Nigeria and things you should know to do documents attestation in Nigeria whether you are using it for educational or employment purposes. In addition, it is pertinent to be informed that attestation or legalization of documents is not only being used or requested in the UAE alone.

Certificate attestation or authentication of documents can be requested by embassies, schools, immigration of the country you intend to travel or employers of labour in that country. Attestation of official documents for company registration is also a must before a foreign company can be allowed to officially operate in another country. Other popular countries where certificate attestation is equally of great importance are Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, Kuwait, Malaysia, Poland, Ukraine, Finland, Belgium, Holland and so on.

The purpose of this particular article is to answer the question of those who want to know which of their documents or certificates to legalize, authenticate or attest before going to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). I will make a list of some important educational certificates below and you can then chose depending on which category you fall.

    1. O’level Certificate (WAEC/NECO)
    2. Degree or HND Certificate (B.Sc, B.Tech, BA, HND)
    3. Masters / Post Graduate Degree
    4. PhD

For some people, the highest level of certificate they possess is Ordinary Level Certificate which can be WAEC or NECO. If this is your category, all you need is to provide the original of your certificate which must have at least five (5) Credits including English and Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.
This certificate will go through the Federal Ministry of Education, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the UAE embassy in Abuja.

NOTE: Make sure you include your secondary school testimonial otherwise the Ministry of Education won’t attend to you.

For a university graduate to attest his or her certificate for use in UAE, you will have to provide the following:
    • O’Level Certificate
    • Degree Certificate.

Both certificates will go through the Federal Ministry of Education (MOE), The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MOFA) and when you are through with these two ministries, you will then attest only the degree certificate at the UAE embassy provided you are not a teacher/lecturer or planning to pick up an employment in thatfield. (The reason for this is just to save some money. An employer will not ask you to attest your O’level certificate if you have a Degree certificate). However, if your budget can accommodate both certificates at the UAE embassy, you can just go ahead and attest both.

For a polytechnic graduate to attest your HND certificate for employment in the UAE, you will have to provide the following:
    • O’level certificate
    • National Diploma Certificate (ND)
    • Higher National Diploma Certificate (HND)

These three certificates will go through attestation at the Federal Ministry of Education, The Foreign Affairs Ministry and you can then single out your already attested HND certificate for the final attestation at the UAE embassy provided you are not a teacher/lecturer or planning to pick up anemployment in that field. (The reason for this is just to save money so you don’t go and spend so hugely on attesting the entire three certificates at the UAE embassy since your employer is only interested in your HND certificate). Make no mistakes, nothing stops you from attesting all the certificates if you have enough money to do so.

For those who have Masters or Post Graduate Degree, you will attest your certificates from O’level up to the highest at the Federal Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs while you complete the attestation process by attesting your Degree and Masters certificates at the UAE embassy. If you want, you can attest all your certificates without any issue as far as you are financially capable to do it.

As a PhD holder, you will have to attest all your certificates from the O’level certificate to the highest certificate you possess at both the ministry of education and foreign affairs. When you are done attesting all the documents at both ministries, you will then complete the attestation process by presenting your Degree, Masters and PhD for final attestation at the UAE embassy Abuja.

NOTE: In all the categories explained above, one thing will be constant during this attestation process which is, "eligibility letter". This letter is being issued by the Ministry of Education to go along with your educational documents to the UAE embassy. In the case of document attestation for the UAE from Nigeria, this eligibility letter is a must. It is also the reason why certificate attestation for UAE is a bit expensive in Nigeria because an applicant will have to attest this letter as well. If you go to the embassy without it, nobody will even look at your documents.
