How To Apply For a
New Driving License
How To Apply For Driving License In Nigeria
People get swindled a
lot when applying for driving license in Nigeria because a lot do not know the
appropriate steps to be taken in getting a new driving license in Nigeria. Not
only that some people are not informed about what it takes to get a new driving
license in Nigeria, they are also very in a hurry to do everything which is why
most of the time, they get over-billed outrageously to get things done. Sadly,
most people still end getting fake license given to them because they will not
use the appropriate approach to get the driving license.
How To Apply For a
New Driving License
Getting a driving license for the first time in Nigeria falls
into two categories. The category of
those who have not driven before who just want to start from the scratch (This
is the only officially recommended process though) and the other category of
those who have been driving even perfectly for a long time but has never deemed
it fit to get an official license or you have been driving with a fake driving
license and you now want to do the right thing.
The first category now will go through the application process
stated below:
You will have to locate one of the accredited driving
school by the FRSC (you can check for accredited driving school from any
nearest FRSC or VIO office closer to you)
Start the school and when you are certified good enough to
drive by your trainer, you will then take a driving test supervised by VIO (Vehicle
inspection officer)
When you are successfully done, you will get a certificate
of driving proficiency
Online Option
- Go to https://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org
and complete a new drivers license on their website.
- You will have a space to validate your driving test
certificate
- Once validated and form filled, you will proceed to
payment. Make the payment online and print your invoice as a proof.
Offline Option
- Go to a Driver’s License Centre (DLC) and complete a form
for a new drivers’ license. Ensure you go with your driving school certificate,
learner’s permit and a copy of your birth certificate.
- Proceed to the bank with the filled form and make payment
for the driving
- When you are done with this,
then you will proceed with all the documents including your birth certificate to
the DLC to get approval.
The documents you will
go with includes the application form, certificate received from driving school,
certificate received for passing the VIO test, birth certificate, eye test
certificate and your learner’s permit.
After this, they will
capture your biometrics and then issue you a temporary driving license which
will be valid for 2 months. At the expiration of the temporary driver’s license
given to you, go back to the DLC to check if your driver’s license is ready or
not. If it is ready, you will pick it up and if it is not, you will have the
date on the temporary driving license extended to cover you till the original
license will be out.
So, How Much Does It Cost To Apply For A Driving License In Nigeria?
- For a 3years driving license, it is
N6,350 and for a 5years license, it isN10,450 - You will get driving school certificate for
N8,000 - VIO certificate for
N1,000 - Eye test certificate for
N500 - Some other miscellaneous expenses may come up in the process but it’s nothing much at all.
If you are in the second category, all you need to do is approach
a DLC and meet any officer, tell him you have been driving and now you need a
valid driver’s license. You can explain to him or her that you don’t want to go
through all the blah blah blah…. (This is
not the officially recommended process)
He will tell you what is needed which will also include the
driving school certificate. He will charge you and once you both agree, he will
get every docs needed. You will write a little test where you will answer a few
questions about road signs and once you are done, your biometrics will be taken
and you will get your temporary driving license for 2 months. When the original
is ready, you will pick it up.
